Porcelain Crowns In Midlothian VA

Porcelain crowns are a type of cosmetic restoration used to strengthen one or more teeth and improve their shape. They are typically used for teeth that are worn, broken or partially damaged by tooth decay.

Dental crowns are placed onto an existing tooth and cemented on, and they cover the part of the tooth above the gum line. As a result, the porcelain crown becomes the new outer surface of the tooth.

Even though crowns can be made of various materials, porcelain is most often preferred because it mimics the translucency and color of natural teeth. Moreover, porcelain is a very strong material, which means that you will be able to enjoy your crowns for many years to come.

At J Han Dental Design, we use modern techniques to restore your teeth' function and look with porcelain crowns.

The process of getting porcelain crowns

Teeth undergo significant damage sometimes, often caused by cavities, trauma, heavy forces, or just normal function. Teeth that have undergone a root canal treatment may be especially fragile, and dental crowns are the best way to rebuild these teeth and restore them to their original function and look.

Crowns can repair a single tooth, multiple teeth, or they may sometimes be used in conjunction with dental implants if there is a gap that needs to be filled.

At J Han Dental Design, we schedule an initial appointment to plan the right course of treatment, and then you will need two more appointments before you get your crowns.

During the first visit, one of our dentists will prepare your teeth to allow space for a porcelain crown. We then submitted all the information to a specialized lab that will create the actual crowns. We'll also fit you with a temporary crown during this appointment that will allow you to speak and eat normally until the porcelain crown is ready.

After two or three weeks, you will return to our dental office for a second appointment so your dentist can fit in your crown and evaluate its appearance and feel. Once you are happy with your crown, the doctor will bond it strongly into place and make any adjustments that might be necessary to your bite.

Porcelain Dental Crowns FAQ

Does it hurt to get porcelain crowns?

Your dentist will need to do some modifications in order for the crown to be placed over your existing tooth or implant. You will be numb for this part of the process, so you won't experience any kind of pain. There might be some minor discomfort after the feeling comes back, but you can easily manage it with the help of over-the-counter painkillers.

The placement of the crown itself doesn't hurt, especially if you have a root canal, because you don't have feeling in the nerves of that tooth anymore. In the case of implants, there may be some pain and swelling, which can be managed with over-the-counter medicines.

Do porcelain crowns need special maintenance?

You can treat porcelain crowns just like any other tooth by sticking to your daily hygiene routine of blasting, mouthwash, and flossing. It's important to get regular dental checkups two times a year. As a rule of thumb, you don't have to worry about any special maintenance for your crowns.

How long do porcelain dental crowns last?

Porcelain crowns typically last at least 15 years with proper maintenance and care, and it's not uncommon for them to last 20+ years. The materials used to build porcelain crowns are highly durable and similar to your teeth' natural enamel in hardness and strength. This means that you can expect your porcelain crowns to last for a very long time.

What are alternatives to porcelain dental crowns?

A crown might be the only option if you lost one or more of your natural tooth structure. If one or more of your teeth have broken down to the point at which dental fillings can no longer work, then the only alternative to a dental crown is to have them removed. This is not a good alternative, though, because it means you will have a space in your mouth that will alter your bite as the surrounding teeth start to drift.

At J Han Dental Design, we use state-of-the-art techniques and materials to create porcelain crowns that look and feel just like natural teeth. If you want to restore your smile's function and look, get in touch with us today and schedule an appointment.
